Different types of and requirements for driving licences in Sweden

Here are the various types of driving licenses, along with their requirements and the vehicle types you’re permitted to drive with that driving licence. 

The list starts with the B driving license and then proceeds alphabetically for other driving license types.

B – private car

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 18 years old.

Valid learners permit.

Passed risk training part 1 and risk training part 2.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

Private car with a total weight of no more than 3.5 tonnes. 

Light lorry with a total weight of no more than 3.5 tonnes.

Off-road vehicles.

Moped class I and class II.

Three- and four-wheeled motorcycles.

Tractor a and b.

Heavy equipment class I and II.

 

AM – moped class I (EU-moped)

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 15 years old.

Valid learners permit.

Passed the training for AM licence.

Passed a theory test.

Moped class I and class II.

Tractor.

Heavy equipment class II.

 

 

 

A1 – light motorcycle

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 16 years old.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a risk training.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

Light motorcycle (125 cc).

Moped class I and class II.

Tractor.

Heavy equipment class II.

 

A2 – medium sized motorcycle

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 18 years old.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a risk training.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

Medium sized motorcycle (35 kW).

Moped class I and class II.

Tractor.

Heavy equipment class II.

 

A - heavy motorcycle

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 24 years old (20 if you’ve had an A2 licence for at least 2 years).

Valid learners permit.

Passed a risk training.

Passed a theory test and driving test (no theory test needed if you already have an A1 or A2 licence).

Heavy motorcycle.

Moped class I and class II.

Tractor.

Heavy equipment class II.

 

B – extended (96)

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

B driving licence.

Passed a driving test. 

Car and trailer with a total combined weight of max 4.25 tonnes.

 

BE – car with heavy trailer

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 18 years old.

B driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

Car or light lorry with either one or more trailers where the total combined weight of the trailer(s) is max 3.5 tonnes.

 

C1 – medium duty lorry

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 18 years old.

B driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

Heavy lorry with a total weight of no more than 7.5 tonnes.

Private car with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes but no more than 7.5 tonnes.

It is also allowed to have a trailer coupled to one of the above mentioned vehicles, this trailer may however not have a total weight of more than 750 kg.

 

C1E – medium duty lorry with heavy trailer

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 18 years old.

C or C1 driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

Medium heavy lorry (C1) with one or more additional trailers coupled where the total weight of all these vehicles is no more than 12 tonnes.

 

C - heavy lorry

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 21 years old.

B driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

Heavy lorry with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes.

Private car with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes.

It is also allowed to have a trailer coupled to one of the above mentioned vehicles, this trailer may however not have a total weight of more than 750 kg.

 

CE – heavy lorry with heavy trailer

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 21 years old.

C driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

 

Heavy lorry with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes (same as C driving licence).

Private car with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes (same as C driving licence).

It is also allowed to have a trailer coupled to one of the above mentioned vehicles, without any max weight.

 

D1 – medium sized bus

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 21 years old.

B driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

A bus with a max lenght of 8 metres and is constructed for a maximum of 16 passengers.

It is also allowed to have a trailer with a max weight of 750 kg coupled to this vehicle.

 

D1E – medium sized bus with heavy trailer

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 21 years old.

D or D1 driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

A bus with a max lenght of 8 metres and is constructed for a maximum of 16 passengers (same as D1 driving licence).

It is also allowed to have a trailer coupled to the above mentioned vehicle, without any max weight.

 

D - bus

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 24 years old.

B driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

A bus without any limit on its length and amount of passengers.

It is also allowed to have a trailer with a max weight of 750 kg coupled to this vehicle.

 

DE – bus with heavy trailer

Requirements

Vehicles you’re allowed to drive

At least 24 years old.

D driving licence.

Valid learners permit.

Passed a theory test and driving test.

A bus without any limit on its length and amount of passengers (same as D driving licence).

It is also allowed to have a trailer coupled to the above mentioned vehicle, without any max weight.

Frequently asked questions

Which vehicles am I allowed to drive with a Swedish B driving licence?

You can drive 7 types of vehicles with a B license: cars up to 3.5 tonnes, light lorries up to 3.5 tonnes, off-road vehicles, mopeds (class I and II), three- and four-wheeled motorcycles, tractors (a and b), and heavy equipment (class I and II).

What type of vehicles are there?

These are the main type of vehicles you may drive with certain driving licences; cars, lorries, motorcycles, mopeds, tractors, heavy equipment vehicles, busses, off-road vehicles, snowmobiles.

Can I drive with a trailer with only a B driving licence?

Yes, but only a light trailer.

What are the basic requirements to a driving licence in Sweden?

At least 18 years old, a valid learners permit, a completed risk training part 1 and risk training part 2, a completed theory test and driving test.

Do I need to do a practical driving test for all types of driving licences and certificates?

No, for some, passing a theory test or completing a specific training is sufficient. Also, with for instance a B license for a car, you may also drive three-wheeled motorcycles without an additional practical test.

At what age can I start with my driving licence?

To get your driving license you must be 18, but you can start with driving lessons at 16.
